Journey Stories exhibition:  January 28 - March 8

Exhibits depict the rich pioneer spirit of western Nebraska. Exhibits include the Sandhills and Aquifer, Native American life, Life in the Country and Railroad Times. The Heritage Room features one of the largest collections for genealogical and historical research in the area.

Kearney’s Trails & Rails Museum, located on the original Mormon Trail, is made up of several historic buildings each housing different exhibits on the history of wagon, train, and auto transportation in and through Buffalo County.  You’ll visit the Union Pacific Depot, 1850s Boyd Ranch House, 1898 German-Baptist Mission Church (which will house the Journey Stories exhibition), 1880s Loup River Freighters Hotel, and 1871 District No. 1 School House.  Click on the museum link above and scroll to the bottom for a video tour.

Each Saturday from June 9 through July 14 a different mini-event will be held in keeping with the Journey Stories theme:

June 9 -- Agriculture Day with speaker Melissa Keyes at 11 AM

June 16 -- Ethnicity/Immgiration Day with speaker Claude Louishomme

June 23 -- Annual Wagons West Celebration from 10 AM - 2 PM with hands-on exhibitors throughout the buildings, a fiddle contest, Buffalo Bingo raffle contest and concessions

June 30 -- Book signings from 10 AM - Noon with Kearney children's author Leslie Means whose character Ella B. Bella goes on journeys to discover a secret ingredient and find her lost magic pink shoes and Grand Island author Mary Ann Carson author of Down the Tracks of Time

July 7 -- Transportation Day with speakers from the Lincoln Highway Museum and Classic Car Collection from 11 AM - 4 PM

July 14 -- Artifact Day with expert volunteers on hand to tell you about each building on the grounds and its special artifacts and stories related to Journey Stories from 10 AM - Noon

Journey Stories on exhibition:  July 23 through August 25

Located between the North and South Platte Rivers in Nebraska, the Lincoln County Historical Museum commemorates the pioneer spirit of the Platte Valley by preserving its history and educating the public on the importance of the region in American history.  Visitors will experience the Western Heritage Village which includes a Pony Express cabin, a Fort McPherson cabin, an 1800's train depot, a one-room schoolhouse, a working blacksmith shop, and many other buildings. The main museum contains treasures of life in Lincoln County, including period room settings, china, quilts, fashions, furniture, a doctor's office, telephone office, post office, beauty shop, DAR collection, natural history, a model railroad, railroad history, military history and lots of photographs. The museum also houses the official exhibit on the world famous North Platte World War II Canteen, which served six million servicemen.

Special Events

During the Journey Stories visit there is an opportunity to see six special local exhibits.  These exhibits feature John Bratt, a pioneer and former mayor of North Platte; the Union Pacific railroad; women employed by the railroad, the local Japanese-American population, the Orphan Train, and the history of the North Platte Regional Airport.

August 2 7 pm -- Panel discussion exploring the journey taken by several foreign doctors that led them to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center

August 14 7 pm -- Vicki Harris presents African-American Homesteaders and Cowboys of Nebraska

To generate excitement about the exhibition, the museum has partnered with a local radio station for a "Journey Around North Platte Photo Scavenger Hunt."  Two clues per week will be given out over Q Country 107.3 FM and on the museum's facebook page.  People use the clues to find locations around town where they take a photo of themselves to turn in to the museum to be eligible for a chance to win prizes.

Explore the 100th Meridian Museum in downtown Cozad with displays and exhibits that tell the stories of the rich heritage of early settlers as well as presenting a portrayal of contemporary life.  Located on the historic Lincoln Highway the museum was completed in 1994 and  is the permanent home for the Concord Touring Coach, the famous stagecoach that carried President Taft during his visits to Yellowstone National Park.

August 30 -- Take your envelopes with postage to the Cozad Post Office.  You will have each piece of mail stamped with the historic First Day Cancel, specifically designed for Cozad.

August 31 -- Noon food served by the Rotary Club at the Wilson Depot at noon.  12:15 whistle stop by the Union Pacific Challenger 844 with Golden Spike Ceremony held under the direction of Mayor Nancy Meyer.  Tours of the depot provided by the United Way Board of Directors.

September 1 -- 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Lindell Whitney on Lionel Trains and Model Railroading

The Washington County Historical Museum, the oldest county museum in Nebraska, houses artifacts from prehistoric time, Native American dress and equipment and relics from nearby Ft. Atkinson.   Early farm tools and equipment, school and household items as well as fine china brought to the county from the old country depict how the pioneers lived in the 1800s.   A display of Thomas Edison items and early telephone equipment moves the visitor into the 20th century.  The library holds early county information valuable to genealogists.

 Madison County Historical Society shall be to collect, preserve, and display objects relating to Madison county history; and to encourage participation by the cities of Battle Creek, Madison, Meadow Grove, Newman Grove, Norfolk, and Tilden, and their surrounding areas in maintaining the history of Madison County.  The museum includes a Christmas Village Collection, Model Railroad exhibit, 25 foot Christmas Village mural, 40' Lewis & Clark mural, Orphan Train Riders exhibit, Telephone Communications exhibit, and a display about local baseball hero Richie Ashburn.
